The Charity

The origins of Trinity House can be traced back to 1380.  It was established by the shipowners and shipmasters of Leith as a charitable foundation to assist destitute sailors and their families.

Over centuries, the functions of the charity expanded as it worked to improve the welfare and safety of the seagoing community.
